Blepharoplasty

How Blepharoplasty Can Resolve Droopy Eyelids

The natural aging process can cause eyelids to sag or droop as a result of elasticity loss. Individuals who experience this problem may notice that they look more tired or that their upper eyelids don’t lift as far as they once did. It’s not unusual for fat pockets to form in the upper and lower eyelids, resulting in a puffier appearance.

People who notice that their eyelids are sagging may wonder what solutions are available. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, could be just the treatment you’re looking for. Eyelid surgery tightens and lifts eyelids that have begun to sag, and can help remove undereye bags that have formed.

An upper blepharoplasty can lift eyelids that are beginning to droop, while a lower blepharoplasty can help with puffy lower eyelids. You can have both types of surgery performed if you have issues with both your upper and lower eyelids, or you can choose only one type of eyelid surgery.

What Are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

There are several benefits to undergoing a blepharoplasty procedure. These include the following.

More Refreshed Appearance

Droopy eyelids or puffy under eyes can make anyone appear tired. While you may experience these symptoms after a late night out or an illness, permanently droopy or puffy eyelids may indicate that the skin is losing elasticity.

Blepharoplasty can help restore the original appearance of your eyelids, resulting in a more refreshed and awake look.

Improved Vision

If you find that your upper eyelids regularly droop or sag, it’s not uncommon to experience some loss of vision as a result. Upper blepharoplasty can correct this kind of sight issue and increase your visual field. This can help when you’re driving, walking, or performing any other activity where hampered vision could cause accidents.

Smoother Social and Professional Interactions

Droopy or sagging eyelids can make you look like you’re narrowing your eyes, overly concerned, or even angry when your face has a neutral, resting expression. Even though you may not be frustrated, your droopy eyelids could give other people pause during social or professional interactions.

By restoring some openness to your eyes and reducing the appearance of droopiness and puffiness, you may find that your interpersonal communications go more smoothly.

Can Be Combined with Other Treatments

People who experience drooping eyelids often have other areas of the face that they’re concerned about. Eyelid surgery can be combined with other treatment options to improve your appearance and provide you with a more youthful appearance.

Common treatments that are often combined with eyelid surgery include dermal fillers, a brow lift, or other aesthetic procedures for the face. Our experienced medical providers can discuss your specific goals and help you to determine the right combination of procedures to meet them.

Long-Term Results

While other, non-surgical options can be used to tighten your eyelids, their results don’t last for the long term, and they are usually very subtle. Blepharoplasty is a longer-term solution that may last up to seven years. While the surgery can’t prevent sagging from recurring, undergoing the procedure can reduce the severity of the drooping.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Good candidates for eyelid surgery include those with excess puffiness that has formed under the eyes. Puffiness is usually caused by fat pads in the lower eyelid. These fat pads may bulge due to genetics or aging.

Patients who are seeking upper blepharoplasty often suffer from excess skin that has formed above the eye. The surgery can help remove the excess skin and tighten the upper eyelid muscles, resulting in a more rested appearance.

What Can I Expect During Eyelift Surgery?

Before undergoing blepharoplasty, you’ll meet with one of our skilled doctors to discuss your eyelid goals. We’ll do a full examination of the eye area to determine the type of surgery that works best to help you achieve those goals.

We’ll also ask you for your full medical history and a list of medications that you are taking to ensure that you’re an appropriate candidate for blepharoplasty.

During the consultation, make sure to ask any questions that you have regarding the procedure. We want to make sure that you’re completely comfortable and understand how the process will work. At your appointment, we’ll also give you information on how to prepare for blepharoplasty and how to care for yourself following the surgery.

On the day of your blepharoplasty, we’ll administer anesthesia to numb the area. Markings will be made on your face to determine the areas that will be treated.

If you’re undergoing an upper blepharoplasty, the procedure will involve cutting away excess skin along the natural eyelid crease. During a lower blepharoplasty, we’ll make the incision below the lower lash line or on the back of the eyelid. Next, we’ll remove the extra fat, which should result in a less puffy appearance.

Following the procedure, we will close the incisions, and you will have a short period of rest in our recovery room. Afterward, you will be released to continue your recuperation at home.

The time required to perform a blepharoplasty varies depending on whether you’re having both the upper and lower areas treated, or just one. However, it shouldn’t last more than two hours in total.
